AI has been used to create novel viruses not found in nature. Arc Institute and Stanford researchers designed 16 viable bacteriophages using AI models, with some of those designs successfully overcoming bacterial resistance. Eric Nguyen's Evo model, which treats DNA like language, has been applied to designing CRISPR-Cas systems and generating a complete bacteriophage genome from scratch. Radical Numerics' newer model, Omnii, combines DNA, RNA, proteins, epigenetics, and other signals to model biological systems holistically; a team member used it to reproduce two years of Alzheimer's-related gene ranking experiments in approximately 30 minutes. The specific viruses created in the cases described are reported as harmless, but frames the underlying capability as a milestone, quoting 'It has fully begun.'
