AI agents placing food delivery orders

The gist

Latest: DoorDash CEO: AI agents placed only hundreds of orders total

The figures put a concrete number on the gap between AI agent hype and actual consumer adoption in everyday commerce. A platform processing nearly 1 billion quarterly orders seeing only hundreds from AI agents shows how limited autonomous agent-driven commerce is in practice.

The full picture

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu disclosed during a Q3 2026 earnings call that third-party AI agents have placed only several hundred orders on the platform across their entire operational period. DoorDash handled just under 1 billion orders in Q3 2026 alone, making AI agent-driven orders a rounding error. Xu called AI agents a "very low use case" for the platform and said simple, routine tasks like food ordering tend to come directly to DoorDash rather than through AI intermediaries. He suggested AI agents have more potential for long-consideration purchases and major decisions.
