Perplexity's SPACE agent sandbox

The gist

Perplexity Open-Sources SPACE Sandbox; CoreWeave Adds Setup Guide

Sandboxing infrastructure for AI agents is an active area of concern as agent escapes have affected organizations including Hugging Face and the Australian government. Making SPACE openly available gives outside developers a production-tested option for isolating agent tasks.

The full picture

Perplexity released SPACE, the sandbox platform running every task in Perplexity Computer, as open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Each agent task runs in its own isolated Firecracker microVM, with credential management and outbound traffic controls enforced from outside the VM. Perplexity reported that SPACE processes millions of executions per day at an error rate below 0.0002%, using cryptographic identity to maintain request integrity across pause, resume, and migration events. Security testing covered 108 red-team attempts in which agents did not escape the virtual machine. Cloud partners CoreWeave, Akamai, and Crusoe have signed on to support the project, and CoreWeave has published a setup guide for evaluating SPACE on a CKS cluster. Separately, Perplexity described its Projects feature as built on a Git forge architecture, where each agent operates in its own sandbox and commits work to a shared repository, allowing humans and other agents to build on that work across sessions.
