Apple Launches M6 Mac Mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio for AI
These machines raise the practical ceiling for running large AI models on local desktop hardware, particularly through expanded unified memory capacity and multi-system memory pooling via Thunderbolt 5.
Apple announced the Mac mini with M6 and Mac Studio with M5 Ultra on August 25, 2026, aimed at local AI inference and software development. The M6 is Apple's first 2nm chip in the Mac lineup, with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, dual 16-core Neural Engine, and 170GB/s memory bandwidth; the Mac mini M6 delivers up to 4x faster on-device AI performance than its predecessor. The M5 Ultra, described as Apple's most powerful Mac chip for AI workloads, combines two dual-die M5 Max chips via UltraFusion into a quad-die SoC with up to 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, up to 512GB unified memory, and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. Apple states the M5 Ultra can hold LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on-device. Mac Studio launches with up to 256GB unified memory; the 512GB configuration arrives in October. Apple also supports Thunderbolt 5 clustering with RDMA, allowing multiple Mac Studio units to pool memory for distributed inference.
OpenAI is buying tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studios to train computer-use agents via reinforcement learning, with purchases large enough to register in Apple's Mac revenue.
